The rank of Private is the junior most having been attained after successfull boot camp training.
The rank of Corporal is attained after a soldier has served for about six to 10 years is in charge of three to nine soldiers.

A soldier attains the rank of Sergeant after serving for between 10-15 years. This is second in command of platoon.
After serving as Sergeant for a certain period, one can attain the rank of senior Sergeant where they can command a platoon of about 40 soldiers in the special forces and elite units.
A Warrant Officer II offers senior advisory services to the company commander besides being in charge of training and discipline of his unit while the Warrant Officer I is a senior service person in the defence forces.

A Second Lieutenant is the first rank a soldier attains after successful training while Lieutenant is a soldier who is still a platoon commander but has received intensive training within the unit. One attains the rank of Captain after serving at least three years away from the country as a Company commander.
A soldier attains the rank of Major after at least 5-8 years in service as company commander or its equivalent and in charge of about 120-250 soldiers.
A Lieutenant Colonel is responsible of about 650-1000 soldiers after intensive training on leadership and other aspects while the Colonel is ordinarily a field commander but has ability and capacity to command a military institution.

A Brigadier is in charge of a brigade which are several battalions of about at least 3000-5000 soldiers. A Major General leads a command that is made up of several brigades.
There are only three Lieutenant General in Kenya being the Kenya army commander, Deputy chief of defence forces and Commandant National Defence college.
