Biography: Alan Alda's most famous role and the one that made him famous is as Hawkeye Pierce, a medic in the phenomenally successful and popular TV series M*A*S*H, adapted from the Robert Altman movie. Alda starred in the series from 1973-1983, winning five Emmy awards and six Golden Globes. Alda eventually became part of the show's writing team, contributing to 19 episodes as well as directing 32 episodes.

Since M*A*S*H Alda has had a long and successful career. He has appeared in a number of Woody Allen films and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator" (2004). On TV he was a regular in the 2004 season of "The West Wing", for which he also won an Emmy. More recently Alda appeared in Noah Baumbach's acclaimed film "Marriage Story (2019).

Alda has received considerate acclaim for his work on stage on Broadway, including being nominated for three Tony awards.

Alda has also been lauded for his efforts to publicize scientific advances. He was the host of PBS's "Scientific American Frontiers" TV show for 14 years and in 2009 founded the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University where he is also a visiting professor. In 2016 he was presented with the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal in recognition of his efforts to communicate advances in science.

In 2019 he was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award.
